What is the ETL process?
ETL is an acronym for "Extract Transform & Load", which stands for Extract, Transform and Load. ETL can be defined as an automated computer tool that collects raw data, extracts the information needed foranalysis,transforms it by applying a suitable format and finally loads it into a Cloud.
The ETL generally summarizes the data to reduce their size and improve their performance for specific analyses.
This software has been around for a long time (1970), and has had to adapt to changing technologies. Large companies are the first consumers of this software, as they have had to start storing different types of data from multiple sources. This software was born out of this need tointegrate diverse data.
ETLs have also had to evolve to meet the new needs of the growth of the Cloud, SaaS and Big Data.
To understand ETLs a little better, let's take the example of a company that grew through physical stores and then through a website. This company will therefore collect data from different sources, which will not have the same format. This is where ETLs come in. They will allow this company to collect the data that it considers relevant from both systems, to transform them, in order to make them compatible with the Cloud.
As a result, ETLs are active in a wide range of industries.
What happens during the ETL process?
The ETL process consists of three steps:
Data Extraction: Extract data that has been specifically identified and then collected from different locations. This data can come from a variety of sources, such as files, spreadsheets, database systems, applications, etc.
Data transformation: once the data has been extracted, it is transported and converted into the appropriate format. This data transformation can include operations such as data cleansing, assembly and validation. This step will provide a report on duplicate data to those responsible for data governance; exclude and/or remove redundant data.
Data loading: load the transformed data into the destination target. This target can be a database or a Cloud.
What are the main uses of these tools?
In most business activities, data play a critical role. ETLs have different use cases such as:
- Migrate data from one application to another.
- Replicatedata for backup or redundancy analysis.
- Perform business processes such as migrating data from a CRM system to an Operational Data Store (ODS) in order to improve or enrich the data and then return it to the CRM.
- Store data in a data warehouse in order to import, sort and transform it in a business intelligence environment.
- Synchronize critical systems.
